Sealey, John E. (? - 1906)

Undersheriff, John E. Sealey was shot and killed by G.C. Greenwood at Hurley early last Wednesday morning, the latter is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Greenwood of this place (Unity) and is operator at the W.C.R. depot.

A burglary had been committed that morning and the officer and two assistants seeing the light to the depot suspected that the burglar had taken refuge therein, and while investigating they aroused George, who sleeps in the office, and who upon hearing the noise and talk about "cash" and "guns" naturally suspected that burglars were attempting to enter. He placed a revolver in his pocket and crawled out a rear window. He was seen by one of the men outside who shouted to the others. George started in pursuit of him and as he went around the corner of the depot met Sealey with a drawn gun, in self defense. George fired the bullet entering Sealey’s right side, he lived 25 minutes, during which time he told those about him that George was not in the least to blame, as the jury so declared the following day.
