North, Stewart D. (March 11, 1923 - July 1, 2004)

Stewart D. North, age 81, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2004. He was born March 11, 1923 on a farm in rural New Auburn to Ray and Emma (Ernst) North. He married Mary G. Engebretson on June 11, 1946 in New Auburn.

He was a graduate of UW-Stout and served in the Army during WWII, receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He started out as a high school teacher and coach, later becoming a professor and Administrator at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and the University of Houston. Stew loved being a teacher throughout his life. After his retirement he continued this through volunteerism. He transported patients in his plane for Angel Fight and enjoyed helping at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, FL. He loved being on the golf course, from his early morning maintenance duties to giving lessons to anyone who would listen to him.

He is survived by his wife Mary of New Auburn and Gainesville, FL; one son, Andy (Susan) of Madison; one daughter, Pamela North of Shoreview, MN; four grandchildren: Nichole (Eric) North Hester of Monona, WI; Andrea (Dave) North Kean of Denver, CO; Bailey Martin of Milwaukee, WI and Mallory Martin of Mankato, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude’s church in New Auburn with Pastor Aimee Wollman officiating. A memorial service to celebrate Stew’s live will be held this fall in Gainesville, FL. Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer is in charge of arrangements.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all the support received from their family and friends, the medical community and the Northwest Wisconsin Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Society, Northwest Wisconsin Hospice or the charity of your choice.
