Stucki, William Paul (28 Sept. 1931 - 15 Oct. 2006)
William Paul Stucki, age 75, resident of Bridgewater Township, Michigan, and adored husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died October 15, 2006, from heart disease and complications resulting from a fall and neck fracture suffered earlier this year.
Dr. Stucki was born on September 28, 1931 in Neillsville, to Benjamin and Ella (Kuester) Stucki, missionaries to the Winnebago American Indians. He was a natural born inventor and engineer, equally at home outdoors and in the laboratory, workshop and kitchen.
Bill served in the U. S. Navy for four years, after which he obtained his bachelor’s degree and Ph. D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. After graduation, Dr. Stucki was employed at the Nuclear Center in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, and then took a position with Fels Laboratory in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He moved with his family to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1967 to work as a researcher at Parke-Davis (now Pfizer), and in 1977 finally settled on a farm outside Manchester, where he and his wife have resided for the last 29 years. He retired in 1986 after his first heart attack and quadruple bypass heart surgery.
Among his many passions, Bill loved photography, woodworking, reading and being with the family, whether at home at the dining table or on a long road trip. He was also a licensed pilot. He loved working with his hands, building a summer cottage and restoring old boats. In his retirement years, he was a gentleman farmer and had a saw-milling business. He was also active in helping his wife Barbara with her business, Raisin Valley Antiques, and refinishing and restoring furniture. He cherished being a father and grandfather, and dispensed his valuable advice and common sense generously. Bill loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his living wife of nearly 51 years, Barbara; his five children, William Mackey Ives, Martha Stucki Mackres, and Rebecca Stucki, all of Manchester; Paul (Christina Chang) Stucki, of Seattle; and David (Nancy) Stucki, of Minneapolis; as well as seven grandchildren, Eric and Stephanie Mackres, Lydia, Anna, and Ava Stucki, and William and Eleanor Chang-Stucki. Bill is also survived by three brothers, Jacob Stucki, of Kalamazoo; Ben Stucki, of Virginia; and David Stucki, of Wisconsin; and one sister, Elizabeth Stucki, of Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two of his beloved sisters, Marie Stucki and Esther Bremer.
A visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2006, from 5 - 9 p.m. at Borek Jennings Funeral Home in Manchester, and a memorial service will take place on Friday, October 20, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ at 324 W. Main Street, Manchester, MI.
