YOUNG MEN FOUND GUILTY

Loyal Boys Convicted of Attacking Young Girl Verdict of Jury Gives General Satisfaction Here

The trial of the five young Loyal toughs charged with the crime of rape occupied the attention of the circuit court at Neillsville all last week and went to the jury Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. At 9:30 the same evening the jury brought in a verdict of guilty as charged and the amount of the defendants' bond was increased from $3,000 to $6,000. The verdict of the jury gives general satisfaction, in Clark county and where the interested parties are known.

The offence was committed upon the person of Annie Englebretson on the night of June 29, 1907, in the town of Sherman, Clark County by Joseph, Peter and Anton Christman and Mattie and Henry Vogel. The state had a very strong case against the defendants, while the latter attempted to besmirch the character of the girl.

District Attorney Crosby was assisted by Senator S. M. Marsh and the defendants' interests were looked after by Attorneys R. J. McBride, L. M. Sturdevant, H. C. Clark and W. J. Rush.

The convictions of these young men--all sons of prominent farmers of Clark county--for this most despicable crime is a just one, and it is hoped that they will all receive the maximum penalty for their deed.
