Cannon, Mabel Ellen (1872 - 10 July 1940)

Miss Mabel Cannon passed away last Wednesday evening at the home of her sister, Mrs. George Heinrich, Onalaska, after a long illness. The body was brought to Neillsville Friday morning, services being held at the Schiller Funeral Home at ten o’clock, Rev. G. W. Longenecker, conducting the rites. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Miss Cannon lived in Neillsville most of her life. She was graduate from the Neillsville high School in 1889, being one of the five members graduating in the ninth class to complete the course in the Neillsville Schools.

The duties of caring for the home fell to Miss Cannon early in life, her mother passing away when she was quiet young.

After the death of her sister, Mrs. A. H. DeLane, Miss Cannon took her three little daughters into her home and mothered them until the father re-married. All through life, Miss Cannon took upon herself great responsibilities. She was possessed of a singular love for motherless or homeless girls, especially those who sought an education and needed assistance while going to school. Many teachers and other young women, who were employed here, but whose homes were elsewhere, profited through her kindly attentions. The women who received sympathy and shelter in the Cannon home became, and always remained her steadfast friends. She was respected and loved by the community as a whole.

Miss Cannon was an admirer of good literature. She read widely and loved to discuss the writings of the best authors with her friends. She spent much of her spare time at the public library.

Surviving are her sister, two nieces, Helen and Marian DeLane, Margaret, having passed away about a year ago, and a number of more distant relatives.
