Johanek, Sophiann (Marriage - 16 Oct. 1940)

At the Methodist church in Neillsville, at 11 o’clock on Wednesday morning, October 16, 1940, amid ferns and baby marigolds, Miss Sophiann Johanek of Black River Falls, and Frankie Clarence Wendell, Neillsville, were united in marriage by Rev. Obed Asp in a double ring ceremony. Mrs. Asp sang the prelude and played the wedding march and recessional.

Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Antos, the former a sister of the bride, who also was married recently.

The bride wore her sister’s wedding gown of lovely white lace over satin, a finger tip veil which fell from white gardenias at the crown. She carried a colonial bouquet and streamers of white baby chrysanthemums. Her sister wore aqua lace over satin and a bow and veil for headdress. She carried a yellow and white bouquet of chrysanthemums. The groom and best man wore dark green suits, with carnations, rosemary and myrtle boutonnieres.

Among those present at the ceremony were two of Mr. Wendell’s half brothers, who are with the National Guard, and were leaving shortly for their new post in Louisiana.

After the ceremony the wedding party drove to the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Johanek, where a turkey dinner was served at two ‘clock by Mrs. James Melichar and Miss Marie Brauner. The beautiful wedding cake was made by Mrs. Antos as was also the bridesmaid’s cake. The home was decorated for the occasion with aqua blue and white streamers, baskets of marigolds and verbenas, and a profusion of beautiful potted plants.

The evening was spent in a social way by relatives and close friends.

The bride attended the local high school and had been employed in Chicago for four years, but recently she had been assisting her parents. She is an energetic young lady, well known in 4-H club work and highly regarded by a wide circle of friends.

The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zschernitz of Neillsville, Wis. He was employed on the farm of his uncle, Frank Dobes.

The couple will make their home with the bride’s parents, where they will assist in conducting the farm.

On Saturday, November 19th, a dance was held in their honor at the Z. C. B. J. Lodge Hall, near Black River Falls.
