Howard, Margaret (9 March 1856 - 19 May 1941)

Greenwood - Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Howard, 85, owner of the Central Hotel who died in Chicago, May 19, were held here last Wednesday with the Rev. A. J. Abbott in charge. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.

A resident of Greenwood since 1905, Mrs. Howard had been ill for some time, and three weeks prior to her death she went to Chicago to remain at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Rieger. Two days before her death she was removed to a hospital, where she succumbed to a heart ailment and complications.

With Mr. Howard she came to Greenwood from Pandora, O., in 1905. They purchased the Begley hotel, which now is known as the Central Hotel, and Mrs. Howard retained possession of the hotel until her death.

The daughter of James and Eliza McBride, she was born March 9, 1856, in Pandora. She was married to William R. Howard on February 17, 1876, and resided on a farm near Pandora for three years, before moving to Greenwood. Mr. Howard died in 1920.

A member of the Grace Methodist Church, Mrs. Howard was active in affairs of the church until recent years, when the weight of years forced her to retire from active service.

During the funeral services Mrs. Chal Perkins and Miss Evangeline Sheets sang, "The Old Regged Cross," and "Abide With Me," and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." They were accompanied by Mrs. Jon Meng. A beautiful array of seasonal and cut flowers was carried by Mrs. E. T. Burch, Mrs. P. W. Gullaord, Mrs. Ole Carteron and Mrs. William Seidelman.

Pallbearers were: John Arends, Adolph Schwarze, Charles Ludwig, August Noetzel, Elmer Johnson and George Speich.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ida Schoonover of Madison, and Mrs. Rieger; a son, Ray, of Greenwood; a brother, Alexander McBride, of Ottowa, O.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Among those from out of town who attended the services were; Mrs. Reiger, Mrs. Schoonover, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lavin of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thrapp of Madison; and Harry of Reiger of Chicago.

Note –

Surname Reiger/Rieger is spelled the way it was in the original write up; not transcribing error.
