Simmons, John W. (22 AUG 1843 - 29 JAN 1939)

John Wesley Simmons, 95, passed away early Sunday morning, January 29, 1939 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Simmons in the town of Beaver. He has been making his home with them for the past 14 years.

Mr. Simmons was born in Willoughby, Ohio, August 22, 1843. He was married in Ohio to Ermina Brooks on November 1866. In 1880 the family moved to Wisconsin where they purchased 80 acres of timberland in the Town of Beaver. This tract of land was gradually added to until it became one of the finest 200 acre farms in the vicinity. Thirty years ago it was sold and he moved to Loyal, Wis.

His first wife died in 1890 and in 1892 he was married to Miss Belinda Fletcher who passed away in 1922.

In 1925 while using dynamite in clearing land he was blinded by the charges and was also practically helpless. For many years Mr. Simmons engaged in logging in this vicinity and Ashland County. He was a member of the school board and assessor of the Town of Beaver for many years.

Mr. Simmons is survived by three sons, George of Miles City, Mont., Everett of Helena, Mont., and John of the Town of Beaver, 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren. A son Wilfred, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Feb. 2, at 2 o’clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. Raymond J. Fleming officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Town of Beaver cemetery.

Pall bearers were Fred Draper, R. M. Pratt, Arthur Darton, Fred Nelson, Ray Prior, and Chas. Clouse.
