Anna Zalizniak (Nov 4, 1924 - May 14, 2007)

NEILLSVILLE -- Anna Zalizniak, 82, of Marshfield, died peacefully Monday, May 14, 2007, at the House of the Dove in Marshfield.

Funeral services for Anna will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville, Wis. The Very Reverend Peter Siwko of St. Katherine's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in St. Paul, Minn., is the celebrant. Interment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Wednesday at the Gesche Funeral Home.

Anna was born Nov. 4, 1924, in the Ukraine, the daughter of Phillip and Olita (Storoshuk) Peremybida. She came to the United States in 1948 and lived in the Chicago area where she married Gregory Zalizniak. They moved to the Marshfield area in 1959 where they farmed. Along with farming, Anna also worked in the laundry department at Saint Joseph's Hospital and retired after 30 years of employment. Anna moved to the Angelus Retirement Community in Jan. 2006, after her husband's death.

Anna was a member of St. Katherine's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in St. Paul, Minn., where she attended church services until her health became poor. Anna was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. Her hobbies included Ukrainian embroidery, gardening, flowers and cooking. She particularly enjoyed bingo while residing at the Angelus where the staff there became her true friends.

Anna will be remembered as a wonderful storyteller of her life in the Ukraine and her survival of World War II. Anna was a beautiful, intelligent woman who will be remembered for her cooking and poetry and her unselfishness towards others. She especially enjoyed her grandsons and great-granddaughter, Brianna.

Anna is survived by her three children; Ihor of Chicago, Ill., Oleg (Leah) of Chili and Mary (Tom) Regner of Granton; and seven grandchildren, Kevin, Andy, Ben (Amanda), Steve, Will, Scott and Craig. Anna is also survived by a great-granddaughter, Brianna.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gregory; and an infant daughter.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Ministry Home Health Care Hospice; House of the Dove; and the staff of Angelus Retirement Community, who lovingly cared for Anna during her illness.

Memorials may be directed to the Ministry Home Care Hospice, 300 W. Upham St. #200, Marshfield, WI 54449 or the House of the Dove, 613 Western Ave., Marshfield, WI 54449.
