UPPER WESTON BRIDGE

The new highway bridge built this winter across Black River, in the town of Weston, was completed Monday, March 3, 1884, at a cost of $4, 450.

It is situated on the section line between sections 9, and 16, 25 2 W., about six miles north of Neillsville, Wis. The bridge has three spans of 104 feet each, making a total of 312 feet without the approaches, and is 18 feet wide and stands 20 feet high from the bed of the river to the under side of chords. The trusses are built after an improved plan. The whole bride is entirely of wood, with the exception of the iron rods and bolts; the chords are made of two pieces of square pine timber 12x14 inches, and 52 feet long, butted together in the center and held in place by another piece of timber of equal length resting one half on each of the lower timbers, and all three pieces securely bolted together. The spans are well braced, and further strengthened by two bents being thrown across each one to prevent them from swaying sidewise. The timber used in the bride is all sawed white pine, from of sap; all joints are coated with coal tar to prevent rotting of the wood.

The piers are two in number, and together with the two abutments on the banks are made of white oak logs, flattened on two sides, which are well bound together with oak ties and secured with iron drift bolts, and when finished were filled with stone.

There has been used in the construction of the bride and piers 100,000 feet of timber, 70 cords of stone and over two and one half tons of iron.

This bridge is without doubt the largest one in Clark County, if not the largest on Black River. It was designed by C. B. Bradshaw and built by him under contract for the town of Weston and Clark County, the latter having appropriated $2,000 **Rest cut off. **
