Sczygiel, John (30 DEC 1883 - 10 APR 1936)

John Sczygiel died at his home in the village of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) on Friday morning, April 10th, 1936, of heart disease. He had been ill for some time, being unable to perform the duties on his large farm in the town of Reseburg for the past two years. He and his family resided in the village but six days before his death.

John Sczygiel was born in Poland on Dec. 20, 1883, having reached the age of 52 years, 3 months and 14 days. He came to America in the year 1904, and making Thorp his home, worked in the lumber camps and on farms until his marriage to Mary Haraburda on June 12, 1911. He then purchased the farm in the town of Reseburg which has been his home until shortly before his death.

He was a man of generous impulses and had filled the various relations of husband, father and friend and filled them well. He had born adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly.

He was a member of the Polish National Alliance Society Group of Thorp.

Besides a devoted wife, deceased leaves to mourn his untimely demise one son and three daughters, Stanley, Olive, Lottie and Lorraine, all at home, two brothers and two sisters in Poland, besides a multitude of friends.

We can only remind these mourners that he is not dead, he is only sleeping, resting after a well spent life here; he cannot, and would not, if he could, return to us, we can if we will, go to him.

The funeral services were held at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church on last Thursday morning, Rev. F.A. Kulig officiating and paying a beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased. Interment took place in the nearby cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jos. Tobola, John Wojcik, Victor Zielinski, Thos. Szatalowicz, Frank Neiman and Frank Arciszewski.
