Van Gorder, Harmon F. (OCT 1846 - 26 JUL 1936)

With the death of Harmon F. Van Gorder, which occurred at the Wis. Veterans Home near Waupaca, July 26th, 1936, another pioneer of the Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) community passed away.

Mr. Van Gorder was born in the state of New York in the month of October 1846, and was therefore 89 years and 9 months old. He served in an Illinois regiment during the Civil War. He was a member of the Thorp ost of the G.A.R. during its existence and his death leaves comrade S.S. Warner the only survivor of that post. Comrade Warner attended the funeral and was the only veteran present, there being not others left in the Thorp country. At the time of his death Comrade Van Gorder was commander of the G.A.R. post at the Veterans home. When rural free mail delivery was established at Thorp, Mr. Van Gorder was appointed carrier on route 1, a position which he filled for many years. He had resided at the Wis. Veterans home for the past 15 years. The funeral was conducted by the Chaplain of the Veterans home in the Thorp M.E. Church, Tuesday, July 28, at 3:30 p.m., interment following in the family lot of the Thorp Cemetery. The W.R.C. and Son of Union Veterans attended, the following members of the S. of V. acting as pallbearers: John Rossman, Amos Sisco, E.H. Fenstermacher, Isaac Sisco, Harry Bull and A.H. McCarty.

Surviving relatives are his wife, three sons, Edwin of Los Angeles, California, Fred of Stanley, Charles of Chippewa Falls; two daughters, Mrs. Howard Peterson of Superior, Mrs. Albert Western (Bessie May) of Madison; two brothers at Albert Lea, Minnesota; 25 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
