Johnston, Gilbert B. (10 Feb. 1863 - 20 Feb. 1931)

PROMINENT ABBOTSFORD PHYSICIAN LAID AT REST SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Gilbert B. Johnston was born in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, February 10, 1863, and passed away at his home in Abbotsford, Wisconsin early Friday morning, February 20, 1931, at the age of 68 years and 10 days.

Dr. Johnston was taken ill while at work in his office Thursday, Feb. 12th, being confined to his home but one week before his death, the result of an attack of double pneumonia and other complications.

Mr. Johnston came from Canada into the states in 1883, at which time he entered the University at Ann Arbor, Mich., to study medicine and surgery. He graduated from the Michigan University in 1887 and started the practice of medicine in Iron Mountain, Mich.

He was united in marriage to Maud Mary Morrison of De Pere, Wis., Feb. 16, 1890. To this union were born two children, Janet and Robert.

From Michigan the family moved to Seymour and then to Athens, the doctor practicing in both cities before locating in Abbotsford in August, 1895.

Shortly after locating in Abbotsford Dr. Johnston was appointed as Soo Line Surgeon, covering the territory from Athens to Thorp, and from Medford to Marshfield in that capacity, and the work at that time was very strenuous. This part of the country was new and the roads muddy but no one ever heard a word of complaint from the doctor when duty called.

It was not our good fortune to know him long, but we only knew him to esteem him. To man, woman or child, he always extended a greeting that lent a ray of light to brighten their pathway. But he is gone. Another name stricken from the ever lessening roll of old settlers. His life work was done and well done. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, and to his friends the soul of fellowship. He will be sadly missed in the entire community. It must be so; these tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang.

He leaves a wife and two children, Janet of Eau Claire and Abbotsford and Robert of Minneapolis, Minn., besides a multitude of friends to mourn his loss.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. After a brief service at the home the remains were taken to the Armory where further services were held, attended by nearly fifteen hundred people who had come to pay their last respects to the departed, many coming long distances.

The services at the house and also at the Armory were conducted by the Rev. Lawton, and the music rendered by the male quartette. The local Masonic order taking charge of the remains and conducting the services at the cemetery. Commandery No. 26 Knight Templars of Neillsville and many masons from surrounding lodges attended in a body, making a very impressive ceremony.

The casket was surrounded with beautiful floral offerings surpassing in beauty and profusion anything ever seen here before, a mute testimony of the friends who loved the sleeper.

At the close of the services all were permitted to look for the last time upon the face of the departed; then the sad cortege moved to the silent city, where with the very impressive ceremony of the Masonic order the remains were left in their last resting place.

The Tribune joins with friends in the entire community in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
