Daniel Gates died yesterday morning at eight o’clock. This event had come at last when the family was not presently anticipating his death. Mrs. Gates was along with her husband when he breathed is last. His son, James L. Gates, is absent at the sea shore. His son-in-law, Hon. R. J. MacBride, is absent in Washington, D. C.
Mr. Gates was born in Washington County, New York, July 11th, 1818. He was married in 1848 and came to Wisconsin in 1854. He kept hotel at Wedges Creek five years, and thence removed to this city, where he has ever since resided. He has been one of Neillsville’s most active business men. As a member of the firm of Gates & Head, he, for many years, carried on an extensive business in meat, flour, feet, &c. In this he was prosperous and acquired a good property. Afterwards he was a stockholder and president of the Clark County Bank. He was one of the promoters of the Black River railroad and contributed several thousand dollars to secure for Neillsville railroad communication with the outer world. He leaves three sons, James, Charles and Edward, and two daughters, Mrs. R. J. MacBride and Miss Nellie Gates. He was a brother-in-law of Hon. James Hewett, mayor of Neillsville, and he had many other relatives in this county.
It is not at this writing known when the funeral will take place.
