Krom, Louis #2 (1882? - 26 AUG 1934)

The Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) community and residents in all direction fro Owen for many miles, were shocked to learn of the almost instant death of Louis Krom, well known and prominent Owen merchant, while driving to Milwaukee last Sunday morning.

Accompanied by his daughter, Jean, Mr. Krom left Owen about 7 a.m. Sunday morning and was driving his own automobile, intending to spend a few days with his family, which only recently changed residence from Owen to Milwaukee for schooling facilities. When only about two miles south of Weyauwega, southeast of Waupaca, it was reported that Mr. Krom attempted to pass a car which was also going south. Suddenly an automobile going north appeared just ahead and when Mr. Krom attempted to cut back into his own lane collided with the car he had attempted to pass, with the result that both cars were thrown into the ditch.

Mr. Krom evidently lost control of his car, but instead of turning over in the ditch, it careened and crashed into a large tree, almost completely wrecking the car and resulting in a head wound which caused Mr. Krom’s death. His daughter escaped with a few minor cuts and was taken to the home of friends in Weyauwega.

Mr. Krom is survived by his wife and five children, Claire, 17, Donald, 16, Jean, 12, Harold, 4, and David, 3.

The death of Mr. Krom is doubly a shock to the community because of the useful life and high esteem in which he has been held during nearly 30 years of residence in Owen, Wis. He was well known for his keen interest in his family, and in his religious life, and has represented a high type of citizen and businessman during his long residence here. His store had gained a wide prominence throughout this territory, and he had also been kept busy with other successful merchandising ventures in Milwaukee.

Mr. Krom was 52 years old, having been born in Skodville, Lithuania.

Funeral services for Mr. Krom were conducted Wednesday it was learned, having been postponed because of the absence of his oldest boy, who was visiting Texas and was unable to reach Milwaukee before.

Among those who attended the funeral services Wednesday were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Krom and son, George and Sol of Withee; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Randall, Miss Cordelia Schamberger and Miss Beatrice Sturgeon of Owen, Wis.
