Engeldinger, George (20 Feb. 1858 - 2 Oct. 1933)

George Engeldinger passed away last Monday morning, October 2nd, at the home of his son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Pokallus, with whom he had made his home for the last three and one-half years. Mr. Engeldinger suffered a stroke of apoplexy on Friday. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at the St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. J. L. Lang officiating, and internment was made in the family lot in the Colby cemetery. The pall bearers were Matt Kesler, Chas. Kesler, Victor Frane, Chas. P. Tessmer, Albert Engeldinger and Louis Frane.

The deceased was born Feb. 20, 1858, in the town of Franklin, Kewaunee county, Wisconsin, thus reaching the age of seventy-five years, seven months and eleven days. He came to Colby fifty-two years ago and worked diligently as the head sawyer at Thomasville for thirty years. This territory was all woods when he came here and he could remember many interesting incidents of the early days as well as the mode of living at that time. In 1911, he purchased the former John Orth farm which he managed until 1918 when he built the present home now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Emil Pokallus.

Mr. Engeldinger was married Oct. 4th, 1883, to Pauline Knaack at Medford, Wisconsin, to which union three children were born. His wife and one daughter preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his death one son, John, and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Pokallus, both of this city, four grand daughters, and one grand son. Also three brothers and two sisters, namely: Nick of Manitowoc, Matt of Colby, John of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Catherine Paulus of Milwaukee and Mrs. Anna Schmitz of Manitowoc.

The deceased was a loving husband and father, an accommodating neighbor, a faithful member of St. Mary’s church and never forgot the hospitable and kindly ways of the early pioneers who settled this country.
