Meach, Elmer (10 Oct. 1868 - 2 May 1934)

Impressive funeral services for Elmer Meach, fire chief of Colby the past fifteen years and secretary of the E.F.U. the past eighteen years, were held under the auspices of the I.O.O.F., of which the deceased was also a member, Sunday afternoon at the Colby M. E. church, Rev. C. Paul Nulton officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. The pall bearers were Chas. Schultz, Carl Holzhausen, John Pribnow, Charles Allmann, Sam Stark and Jim Colby. The flower girls were Mildred Johnson, Wanda Hemmy, Lenore Crosby, Irene Dix, Norma Lube, Dorothy Edblom and Genevieve Krepsky. Members of the Colby fire department and city council marched as an escort.

The deceased was born October 10, 1868, at Lomira, Wis., thus reaching the age of sixty-five years, six months and twenty-two days and came to Colby over fifty years ago. He was employed at the Colby Hardware Company as a mechanic and plumber. He was married to Dena Watenphool on October 17, 1897. He died Wednesday, May 2, after an illness of about one year, cancer of the bone being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. He is survived by his widow, three daughters and two sons, namely - Mr. Floyd Meach, Milwaukee; Mrs. E. W. Marien, Milwaukee; Mrs. Walter Wolk, West Allis; Mrs. L. E. Johnson, Colby; Melville Meach, Colby. Also five grandchildren. Four children preceded their father in death.

Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mrs. Mary Rahl, Mr. A. Rahl, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Rahl and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rahl and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Travis, Mr. Harry Rahl and Miss Alice Goadaceu, all of Augusta, Wis., Mrs. Henry Smith of Exland, Wis. Children from out of town here were Mr. Floyd Meach, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wolk and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Marien. Out of town friends here were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hanson, Owen; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Lulloff, Dodgeville; Mr. and Mrs. Art Olson, Thorp; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edblom, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson, all of Unity.

It was the writer’s good fortune to have known the deceased long and well and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. Today we miss his kindly smile and friendly greeting. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, a good neighbor and an industrious worker, always performing his duties to the best of his ability. His character was also above reproach, which won for him the friendship and esteem of all who knew him.

In his younger days, the deceased was a star baseball player and caught behind the plate when players had no gloves.
