Norton, James F. (26 MAR 1882 - 19 SEP 1937)

James F. Norton, 55, owner of the Soo Hotel in this village (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.), who has been employed as chef at the Charles Hotel at Marshfield for the past seven years, died of a heart attack in his room in the Charles Hotel annex Sunday evening or early Monday morning. Mr. Norton had complained of feeling ill Sunday but had been able to continue his work. He was found by hotel employees about seven o’clock Monday morning.

The body was brought to the Bogumill Funeral Home at Thorp Monday where it lay in state and Christian Science funeral services took place there at three o’clock Wednesday afternoon. An obituary will be published next week.

James F. Norton was born in New York State on March 26, 1882, and when a child, moved with his parents to Joliet, Ill., where he was brought up and educated.

He was married to Miss Rose Craig of Thorp, on April 21st, 1911, in Michigan, and came to Thorp the same years, opening up the Soo Hotel, which he owned at the time of his death.

Since Feb. 12, 1930, Mr. Norton has been employed as chef at the Charles Hotel at Marshfield.

Surviving him are Mrs. Norton and two daughters, Vera of Chicago, and Betty Jane, Thorp, his mother, Mrs. Belle Norton, Chicago, one sister, Mrs. Carey Hamilton, Chicago, and seven brothers, Edward and Harry of Chicago, Thomas, Joseph, Louis, Frank and William of Joliet, Ill.

The funeral was held at the Bogumill Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon, Christian Science services being conducted by Mrs. Gilhausen, First Reader of the Christian Science Church of Marshfield, with singing by Mrs. Ray Williams of Marshfield.

On Thursday the body was taken to Minneapolis for cremation at the Memorial Park Crematory, this being the expressed desire of the deceased, and the ashes lie in the Memorial Park Crypt.
