Schmidt, Emma (9 Aug. 1871 - 26 Sept. 1936)

Mrs. August Schmidt died at the home of her brother in law at Milwaukee Saturday, September 26th, heart trouble of twelve years duration being the cause of her departure to the heavenly goal. Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran church at Colby Tuesday, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were Frank Sterzinger, Otto Diers, Rudolph Stock, Ed. Stock, Wm. Staffeil and Wm. Gosse. Flower girls were Hildegard Schmidt, Dorothy Thalacker, Alice Staffeil, Bertha Dins and Dorothy Dins.

The deceased was born in Westfield, Wis., Aug. 9, 1871, thus reaching the age of sixty-five years, one month and seventeen days. She was married to August Schmidt at Milwaukee Jan. 20, 1897, which union was blessed with three children, one of whom died in infancy. They came to this locality in 1920, and, for many years, resided on their farm in the town of Colby, but the past few years they lived on their farm at Westfield during the summer months, returning to Colby for the winter.

She is survived by her widower, two sons, Ernest Schmidt of Medford and Gerhardt Schmidt of Abbotsford and two sisters and two brothers - Mrs. Gustave Thalacker of Montello, Wis., Mrs. Charles Duesterhoeft of Westfield, Wis., Fred Hollman of Madison, Wis., and Emil Hollman of Montello, Wis. Also five grand children.

Out of town people here for the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Gust Thalacker and daughter, Dorothy, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hollman and son, Herbert, Mrs. Wm. Hollman and son, Norbert, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dettman of Montello, Mr. Fred Hollman of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Appelman and son, Norman, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Appelman of Milwaukee, Mrs. Charles Duesterhoeft, Mr. and Mrs. Gust Reiman, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Reiman, Mr. Paul Reiman. Mr. and Mrs. Jule Buchholz, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Henke, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Henke, Mr. Herman Henke, Mr. August Henke, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Streich, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Mayer, Mr. Ed. Peschel, Mrs. Herman Hollman and children, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Hollman and children, Mrs. Wm. Zabel of Westfield, Mr. Alfred Reiman of Waupaca, Mrs. Fred Gaylord of Nekoosa, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Neitzel and children of Goodrich, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ertl, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Mellenthin, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Tober of Unity, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. DeMert and son, Gustave, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence DeMert and son, Gustave, Mr. and Mrs. Walter DeMert, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence DeMert, Mr. and Mrs. Lenard Wacholz of Neillsville, Mrs. John Bowen of Withee and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Krueger of Curtiss, Wis.

The deceased was a good Christian and a faithful member of the Lutheran church. She was not only faithful to her church but always faithful to her duties, always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need - both in acts of kindness and in words. Her life was gentle, but, like the still waters, it was deep. Her step never failed in ministering unto, caring for, or waiting upon those who were in any way dependent upon her.
