Schmidt, Mathias (27 Jan. 1861 - 5 Nov. 1936)

Mathias Schmidt passed away at his home in Colby at twelve o’clock Thursday, November 5th, a stroke being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. He had been ill twelve days. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home at 1:30 and at 2:00 o’clock at the Reformed church, Rev. H. K. Hartmann officiating, and intenments was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were Wm. Benzmann, Abe Butler, Louis Fink, August Stock, Ernest Mandel and Walter Wiersig.

The deceased was born in New Holstein, Wis., January 27, 1861, thus reaching the age of seventy-five years, nine months and nine days. He was married to Rosina Carolina Lerche at Chilton, Wis., April 8th, 1885, and lived on a farm near Hayton, Wis., until 1920 when they moved to Colby. He is survived by his wife and six children, namely - Mrs. Alex Thede of Colby, Mrs. George Geisler of Milwaukee, Herman Schmidt of Plymouth, Alvin Schmidt of Colby, Edward Schmidt of Denmark and Mrs. Laone Witte of Milwaukee. Also three brothers, Reiner Schmidt of Ashland, Wis., John Schmidt of Hay Springs, Neb., and Henry Schmidt of Chadron, Neb.

Out of town people here for the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. George Geisler and daughter and Mrs. Laone Witte and Grace Schmidt of Milwaukee, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schmidt of Plymouth, Jeanette LaVerne and Herbert Stahl of Denmark, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lerche of Manitowoc, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Winkler, Otto Hoeft and Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner of Chilton, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hoeft, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hoeft and Mr. George Thede of New Holstein, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thiel and son, Audry, of Greenwood, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wakner of Granton, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. John Manlstead of Withee, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Anderson and Oscar Kademan of Curtiss, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cameron and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cameron of Ashland, Wis.

The deceased was a good Christian and a faithful member of the Reformed church, of a kind and friendly disposition and will be missed by members of his family as well as by his friends.
