Cook, Amanda M. (4 Feb. 1853 - 1 Feb. 1939)

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for Mrs. Amanda M. Cook, a resident of Unity for 57 years, who died Wednesday night, February 1, at 8:30, at the age of 85 years at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Everett C. Hirsch, at Wausau. She had been ill for ten days. Rev. Noble E. McLaughlin, pastor of the First Universalist church in Wausau, conducted the services at the Helke Funeral Home at Wausau and burial followed in the Colby cemetery.

Mrs. Cook was born in Greenbush, Sheboygan county, Feb. 4, 1853, and was married at Stockbridge August 14, 1873, to Alfred Cook. Mr. Cook died in 1920, and, for the past several years Mrs. Cook made her home with her children.

Surviving are seven children, Geo. S. Cook, Walter E. Cook and Raymond Cook, all of Unity, Mrs. A. E. Mason of West Allis, Miss Mabel P. Cook of Chicago, Mrs. A. F. Tollefson of Solon Springs and Mrs. E. C. Hirsch of Wausau. Two brothers, Almeran Blood of Buffalo, Minn., and Guy Blood of Dassel, Minn., also survive.

The deceased was the mother of a large and gifted family, some of whom now have "silver threads among the gold." None ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of a genuine hospitality, so characteristic of the early settlers. She was a good Christian and always considered the welfare of her own family in preference to her own pleasures.

Among those from Unity who attended the funeral of Mrs. Amanda Cook at Wausau Friday were Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Cook, Walter Cook and daughter, Dorothy, Calvin and Shirley Cook, Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Mabbot, and Herman Voigt. Others from out of town in attendance were the Rev. and Mrs. Raymond J. Fleming, Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Andrews, Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Healy, Stanley; Mr. and Mrs. Roderic Cook, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Niehaus, Marshfield; Miss Mabel Cook, Chicago; and Mrs. Art Mason, of Milwaukee. Fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild were present at the funeral.
