Engeldinger, Mathias (15 Sept. 1855 - 5 Dec. 1940)

Funeral services for Mathias Engeldinger, who died last Thursday morning of pneumonia and old age were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church Saturday morning. Rev. C. L. Brady of Abbotsford officiated due to the illness of Rev. L. J. Lang and internment was made in the parish cemetery. Pall bearers were John Schlimm, C. Joe Kraus, A. M. Bauer, Joe Sazama, Matt Allar, Sr., and Abe Butler. Those in charge of the flowers were Esther Kesler and Bernice Pokallus.

The deceased was born in Cooperstown, Kewaunee county, Wisconsin, on September 15th, 1855, thus reaching the age of 85 years, two months and 18 days. He was married to Caroline Ashenbrenner at Two Rivers on April 19, 1887, to which union two children were born, a son and a daughter. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Engeldinger purchased a tract of land in the town of Colby which by hard and diligent work they built into a fine farm. Twenty years ago, they moved to the city of Colby, Wis.

Surviving are one son, Albert Engeldinger, on the home farm, and Miss Anna Engeldinger, at home. Also three grand children and one brother and two sisters - John Engeldinger of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Catherine Paulus of Milwaukee and Mrs. Anna Schmitz of Manitowoc. Mrs. Engeldinger died in July, 1936.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mrs. Anton Staddler, Mrs. Ann Harlow, Nick Engeldinger, George Bertler, Imelda Bertler, Frances Bertler, John Ashenbrenner, Tressie Ashenbrenner, all of Manitowoc, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kaiser, John Kaiser, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kaiser and Myron Kaiser, all of Stratford, Oliver Kaiser of Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rohr of Riplinger and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Frane of Curtiss, Wis.

The deceased was one of the oldest pioneers in this locality, who built a large farm which is now owned by his son, Albert Engeldinger. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s church, a good husband, father and neighbor, and was always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need.
