Wallin, Charles (1867? - 23 Apr. 1946)

An elderly couple from Ellison Bay, Door county, were dead today as a result of a head-on car-truck crash at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday three miles east of Abbotsford on Highway 29.

The dead are Charles Wallin, 79, who was instantly killed when the car he was driving collided with a truck driven by Roy S. Pierce, 38, Dorchester, and Mrs. Hanna Wallin, 70, who died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. Pierce was uninjured.

Pierce told County Traffic Officers Jack Nutter and Frank Nienow that he noticed Wallin was over the blackline as the vehicles approached each other and that Wallin swerved suddenly into his path just before the truck and car came abreast.

Pierce said he made a split-second decision to attempt to avoid the crash by taking the ditch on the left, but collided with Wallin’s car as he was crossing over the center line.

The impact sheared and crushed the left side of Wallin’s light-weight coach from the front bumper to a point beyond the door, the officers said.

A coroner’s jury was called to view the scene of the accident and an inquest will be held in about a week.
