Dulek, Vita (23 Jan. 1931 - 25 Oct. 1952)

Mrs. Ronald Dulek of Thorp, age 21, her three-year-old daughter, Dianne, and her two-year-old son, Dennis, were killed in a train-auto crash at Thorp, Wisconsin Saturday. Members of the train crew said they saw the car speeding southward toward the crossing, just north of Highway 29, but could not stop. They said the locomotive was almost upon Mrs. Dulek before she looked up.

The automobile was dragged 2,300 feet along the tracks before the train could be stopped. Mrs. Dulek’s body was found 1,410 feet from the point of impact, according to John Bergemann, Clark county coroner. The children were not thrown from the car which was so tightly wedged beneath the engine that it had to be anchored to the tracks before the engine could back away from it. Dianne was dead. Dennis died a few hours later in the Stanley hospital.

Mr. Dulek, husband and father of the accident victims, was at his work in the Farmer’s Cooperative store in Thorp at the time and is the only surviving member of the family. He was prostrated by the news and was also taken to the hospital to be treated for shock but was released later in the day.

*** Note: Mrs. Dulek’s date of birth and first name is from the St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery Index, Withee Twp., Clark County, Wisconsin.
