Kraut, Arthur (30 May 1898 - 6 Sept. 1953)

Arthur Kraut of Curtiss, Wisconsin, age 55, was instantly killed near the Lookout tavern three miles west of Abbotsford at 6:20 P.M. Sunday.

Kraut, owner and operator of a motor scooter equipped with a side car, had visited the tavern. At the time he left, headed for Abbotsford, he stopped his scooter before entering U.S. Highway 29, but entered the highway directly ahead of the auto driven by Mrs. Alice Koss, of route 1, Stanley, who was headed west toward her home.

She said she was so close to Kraut and his scooter that she had no opportunity to apply her brakes and the Koss auto struck the front of the scooter, ripped off the front wheel.

After the scooter was struck, it traveled a distance of about 50 feet and into a ditch on the north side of the highway. After it came to a stop, Kraut fell from the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway. He was dead when he fell.

Harry Cook of Abbotsford, approaching from the west in another car, witnessed the accident.

Examination of the body disclosed that Kraut had sustained a fractured skull, and that both his legs were badly lacerated below the knees.

Sheriff Frank Dobes and Coroner John Bergemann, Neillsville, investigated the scene. Coroner Bergemann late Monday stated that in all probability there would be no inquest held in the matter.

A single man, Kraut lived with his sister, Miss Bertha Kraut ***
