Steele, Roger L. #2 (30 OCT 1919 - 27 JUL 1941)

A tragic accident occurred on Sunday, July 27th, 1941, when Roger, 22, youngest son of Arthur Steele of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.), met death by drowning while swimming in a stone quarry pool near Lannon, Wis., with friends, seeking to evade the heat by an early morning dip. In an effort to save Roger, one of his friends, Lawrence S. Blochowiak, 24, of 2432 W. Kilbourne Ave., Milwaukee, also lost his life.

Roger Lloyd Steele, youngest son of Anna and Arthur Steele, was born Oct. 30, 1918, at Thorp (Clark Co.), having reached the age of 22 years, 8 months and 27 days.

In 1933 Roger moved with his parents to a farm near Greenwood. He graduated from Greenwood High School with the class of 1936 as an honor student. He was employed at Greenwood until January first of this year when he left for Milwaukee where he was employed at the time of his death.

Roger had a very pleasant personality which won him many friends wherever he went.

He leaves to mourn his untimely passing, his father, Arthur Steele, of Greenwood, two brothers, Paul of Greenwood and Arthur Jr. of Thorp, three sisters, Ruth, Mrs. John Zimmer of Greenwood, Nina Mrs. Romain Brunet of Chetek, Maude, Mrs. Chas. Frinack of Thorp, six nieces and six nephews, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

This occasion seems doubly sad as this is the third son and brother of this family has had to part with, all meeting tragic deaths, and two years ago the mother passed away with a heart attack.

The body was brought to Thorp and lay in state at the Bogumill Funeral Home until the time of the funeral. Short service was held at the Funeral Home at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon and at 2:00 o’clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. Jas. Irish and Rev. Gaylord of Stanley officiating. Burial was made beside his mother and brothers in the East Thorp Cemetery. Pallbearers were Arthur Christie, Luke Buker, Edmund Alger, Kenneth Luther, Norman Liebzeit and Dean Hubbard.
