Orth, Matthias J. (11 Oct. 1881 - 11 June 1949)

Matthias J. Orth of Colby, a distributor for the Marshfield, Wisconsin Brewing Company for many years, died Saturday morning at 3:30 o’clock at his home in Colby, Wisconsin at the age of 67 years. He had been ill several months. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating at the requiem high mass, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Ed Feit, John Engeldinger, A. M. Steinwand, Harry Wescott, C. J. Kraus and Ed Becker.

Mr. Orth was born in the town of Colby on October 11, 1881, and was married in Colby, Wisconsin on June 20, 1906, to Margaret Harry. For 11 years, he was distributor for Michsels Brewing Co. of LaCrosse, until prohibition, when he moved onto a farm at Unity where he lived for 12 years and then moved to Colby and was the distributor for the Steinwand Bottling Co. until the repeal of prohibition when he became distributor for the Marshfield Brewing Co. until the time of his death.

Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Patrick (Ruby) Donahue of Upland, Ind., and a son, Harry Orth of Adams. There are six grand children. Also three brothers and five sisters - Conrad Orth of Colby, George Orth of Abbotsford, Charles Orth of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Lena Elclepp of Phillips, Mrs. Catherine McKinnow of St. Paul, Mrs. Paul (Elizabeth) Tesmer of Colby, Mrs. Otto (Anna) Baumgart of Unity and Mrs. Theodore (Pauline) Steinwand of Colby, Wis. A sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

Mr. Orth was of a very congenial and obliging disposition which made him many friends, all of whom were sorry to learn of his departure. He was a good Christian, a fine husband and father and always endeavored to perform his duties honestly and well.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Marske and Mrs. Viola Brunner of Manitowoc, Oscar Johnson of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Otto Sill of Kansas City, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Sterner of Winsted, Minn., Ralph Lawrence, Frank Roider and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Harry of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Caron of Harshaw, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Seidel of Dorchester, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Will and Mr. and Mrs. Matt Hoffman of Wausau, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Orth and Mrs. Aensil of Manitowoc, Mr. and Mrs. Art Schuette and Wm. Will, Jr., of Loyal, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Seigert of Dorchester, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Carroll of Chicago, Ill., Joe Orth of Abbotsford, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Tennis, Joe Tennis, Bernard Tennis and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Tennis of Unity.
