Thomas, David & Mary Elizabeth (50th Anniversary - 4 DEC 1932)

Mr. and Mrs. David Thomas celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, Sunday, December 4, 1932.

Miss Mary Elizabeth Williams was born at Snelly, June 4, 1862, and Mr. Thomas was born in the town of Harrison, near Menasha, August 29, 1858. They were married December 4, 1882 at the home of the bride at Snelly, the Rev. T. J. Evans officiating. Later they moved to Menasha where Mr. Thomas was employed at the Hulce brickyard.

In 1885 they took up a homestead at Brooklyn, N. D., and in 1887 they moved to Spokane, Wash., where Mr. Thomas was employed by the Spokane Traction company when their street cars were drawn by horses. They witnessed the Spokane fire which wiped out practically all of that city and following which the inhabitants lived in tents until new homes could be built. Mr. Thomas operated the first electric street car in Spokane.

In 1890 they moved to Kalispell valley, Wash., now known as the Kalispell Indian reservation, which at the time was almost unsettled by white men. In 1894 their son, Roland, was born and in that same year they experienced many hardships due to the flooding of the Pend OReille river, when the people in the valleys fled to the mountains while their homes were swept away in the 35-foot rise of the river. In 1899 they moved to Kimberly, where Mr. Thomas was employed as a mechanic by the Kimberly Clark Paper company until 1901. Later they settled on a farm at Maple Ridge, northeast of Mosinee, and on October 4, 1901 their daughter Jane was born. In 1909 Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and family moved to Abbotsford where Mr. Thomas was employed by the Wisconsin Central railroad until the division headquarters was moved to Stevens Point.

A brother, Wm. Thomas, and his son John have resided with the family since 1906.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas are members of the First Presbyterian church and Mr. Thomas is a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, of which he was a member twenty years.
