Filipek, John (17 OCT 1892 - 13 JUN 1943)

John Filipek, 50, died at his farm in the Township of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.) at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 1943, after drinking carbolic acid. County Coroner H.L. Brown announced that the case was clearly one of suicide, no inquest would be held.

Mr. Filipek has been in ill health for many years, and had been brooding over court charges recently made in regard to electioneering at the polls at the April election. He was to have appeared before Justice W.A. Campman at Neillsville on Monday.

Funeral services will be held at St. Hedwig’s Church on Thursday morning, June 17th at 10:00 o’clock, the body lying in state at the home until the hour. The deceased a veteran of World War I and Third Vice-Commander of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of the American Legion of Thorp, will be buried with military honors.

Last rites for John Filipek, 50, who died at his home in the Town of Withee June 13th, after drinking carbolic acid, were held Thursday, June 17th.

A short service was read at the home where the body lay in state until the time of the funeral and the requiem mass was solemnized at St. Hedwig’s Church at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Fr. Piekcarski officiating.

The deceased was born in Poland on Oct. 17, 1892. He came to America at the age of 17 years and resided at Calumet, Michigan. He served in World War I and on June 28, 1921 was united in marriage to Katherine Mocadto of Thorp. The family lived with Mr. and Mrs. Mike Mocadto on the same farm for the past twenty-two years.

Mr. Filipek was a member of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of the American Legion, whose members escorted the remains to the grave and conferred military honors with firing squad and sounding of taps.

He is survived by his wife and five children, Chester of Chicago, Pvt. Walter of Camp Croft, S.C., Edwin, Loretta and Henrietta at home, one sister, Mrs. John Sumiec of Thorp.

Interment took palce in St. Hedwig’s Cemetery, American Legion members acting as pallbearers.
