Bartell, Emma (21 Jan. 1869 - 8 Jan. 1944)

Mrs. Emma Bartell, a resident of Neillsville for the past 46 years died Saturday, January 8, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Schnug, at Reedsburg, Wis. She was 74 years, 11 months and 18 days of age.

Mrs. Bartell had been in the southern part of the state of visit her children there, when overtaken by the fatal illness. Death was attributed to a heart ailment.

The deceased as born Emma Krause, in Germany, on January 21, 1869, the daughter of Edward and Henrietta Krause. She received her education there, and when she was 19 years of age, came to the United States, making her home with an aunt in Waushara County. On November 10, 1892, she was married to H. E. Bartell, her surviving husband. In 1897 they moved to Neillsville and have resided here since. She has been a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church since she had lived here.

Mrs. Bartell was a kind and loving wife and mother. She was a lover of flowers. Through her knowledge of flowers and her untiring efforts, she made of her home on of the beauty spots of this community. Beside her home and church work, she took an active interest in the Townsend club.

In addition to her husband are left the five children: Paul, of Neillsville; Libbie, Mrs. John Meade, Milwaukee; Lydia, Mrs. Louis Petri, Milwaukee; Erwin, of Ripon; and Clara, Mrs. George Schnug, Reedsburg. One half sister, Mrs. Ed. Kalsow, and five grandchildren also survive. All of the children and grandchildren were here for the funeral services.

Funeral services were held on January 11, at the Jaster Funeral Home, and at St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. William A. Biegler officiating. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Hemp, Hans Walk, Albert Degener, John Thoma, William Duge and Ferdinand Kopp.
