Neillsville – CART Center Hosts Bingo for Winter Carnival (2024)
By June Thompson
The 54th Annual Neillsville Winter Carnival was held Feb. 23¬–25. This year, the
Clark Cultural Art Center (CART) hosted two events Feb. 24.
The afternoon event, bingo, was sponsored by the Neillsville Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Tea Moscinski, director of the Chamber of Commerce wanted to be involved in this
event.
“We had this for representation for [the Chamber],” Moscinski said.
Chamber of Commerce members from Simplicity Credit Union, Lori Buffington and
Janalee Kapusta, sold bingo sheets and called back winning numbers.
After an afternoon of playing bingo, visitors to the CART Center were
entertained by the Blues Brothers (Community Opening Act) and Zendor Magic Show.
Brothers Wayne, Larry, and Tom Opelt performed their rendition the Blues
Brothers’ “Soul Man,” “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” and “Rollin’: Theme
from Rawhide.”
This performance was in memory of Jim Griepentrog.
The evening entertainment at CART was The Magic of Zendor, the Magician. This
free event was possible by a grant from Xcel Energy.
Zendor has been entertaining since age eight. He uses tricks and humor in his
show. His goal is to make the audience laugh and have a good time with the
magic.

“Atmus matched the funds,” Hensiak said, “and employees voted to donate the
money to the library.”
“It’s going for the sustainability of the Storybook Trail in Schuster Park,”
Ziebell said.

She encourages library patrons to visit the Storybook Trail.
“I’d like to know who walks through it,” Ziebell said. “I want to do a family
story time there.”

Neillsville – Retired Jeweler Visits Renovated Store (Corey - 2024)
By June Thompson
Neillsville residents and visitors from the 1960s through the 1980s, might have
seen Corey’s Jewelry store in downtown Neillsville on Hewett Street, possibly
having been a customer, buying a wedding ring or a fine necklace. But that
business closed in 1984 and was sold to Wickersham Jewelers.
The 1800s building sat empty for years until someone wanted to renovate it. That
occurred a few years ago, when Jeff and Maxine Kluckhohn acquired the property
and restored it.
Currently, there is a new business in the former Corey’s Jewelry store: Simply
Creative, owned by Jodi and Greg Sampson.
With all the restorations complete, Gary and Lois Corey visited the store Feb.
29, and met the Sampsons and Kluckhohn’s.
The Coreys spent an afternoon reminiscing about what the jewelry store was, and
the Kluckhohn’s talked about how the building’s restoration.
When Jeff and Maxine Kluckhohn acquired the building, renovations included
gutting the upper section and cleaning it—three years of work.
“The cost just for materials was $250,000,” said Jeff and Maxine Kluckhohn.
The Kluckhohn’s did all the labor themselves.
“It sat for a lot of years,” said Jeff Kluckhohn. “Everything had to come out
and we turned [the upstairs] into an apartment.
There was a hole in the floor and the ceiling leaked.”
“You must have had a great idea to start,” said Gary Corey.
He and his wife, Lois, looked at the restoration photos.
“I knew we could do something with the upstairs,” said Maxine Kluckhohn. “We put
in a fireplace, looking as if it had always belonged there.
“I sanded the outer steps and stripped the paint. I swear I inhaled all the
dirt. And I repainted the stairs.”
Simply Creative’s entrance has the original tin ceiling and a red and white
sign, reading “Red Owl Agency.” The sign was originally from a grocery store
prior to the jewelry store.
When The Kluckhohn’s purchased the building, Maxine Kluckhohn visualized what
she wanted to accomplish.
“But I’m the grunt,” said Jeff Kluckhohn.
Jeff Kluckhohn is on the Historic Preservation Commission Committee. He
mentioned the 1897 Clark County Jail Museum needs restoration.
Restoring an 1800s vacant building required time and money. The Kluckhohn’s had
the time and funds for such a project. They have also renovated other buildings.
Yet, the Coreys wanted to know how the Kluckhohn’s accomplished this extensive
renovation project.
“Where did you get your experience from?” Lois Corey asked.
“It was trial and error,” said Jeff Kluckhohn. “We’ve done this five or six
times,” said Maxine Kluckhohn.
The Kluckhohn’s renovated the old Omaha Hotel in Neillsville years ago. There
are apartments upstairs. The building was shown on the Tour of Homes.
“We rent the apartments and there is business expense depreciation,” said the
Kluckhohn’s.
“Most old buildings have been rehabbed,” said Jeff Kluckhohn. “There are a lot
of stories in these old building.”
“For us, it’s time together,” said Maxine Kluckhohn.
“Something to do in the winter,” said Jeff Kluckhohn.
After reminiscing about the store’s new look, Gary Corey talked about his life
and why he was a jeweler.
Gary Corey was born and raised in Greenwood. He graduated in 1949 and attended
Bradley University in Peoria, IL to study horology. He served in the Korean War.
He worked at a jewelry store owned by Frank Brown, but later bought him out.
“I wasn’t much of a book learner,” said Gary Corey. “I was mechanically
inclined.”
He sold necklaces and wedding rings, among other jewelry.
“I had a good-looking lady who could sell,” said Gary Corey. “I made money.”
After retiring from the jewelry business, Gary Corey donated much of what he
acquired from Frank Brown, and some of his own things, to the 1897 Clark County
Jail Museum. He decorated a room upstairs in the museum, displaying watches, hat
pins, costume jewelry and a jeweler’s work desk.
