Cook, Walter E. (21 Dec. 1888 - 13 Oct. 1955)

This community was shocked to learn of the death of Mr. Walter E. Cook, 66, who passed away Wednesday night at the Methodist Hospital at Madison.

Mr. Cook, a lifelong resident of Unity, was Assemblyman from Clark County and was attending a meeting of the Legislature when he was taken to the Methodist hospital there and underwent surgery Monday.

His daughter, Mrs. John Cromie, Seattle, Washington, flew here to be with her father.

At the time of going to press Thursday, funeral arrangements have not been made.

Assemblyman Walter Cook, 66, died last week Wednesday, October 12th at the Methodist Hospital, Madison.

Mr. Cook, a lifelong resident of Unity, was Assemblyman from Clark County and was attending a meeting of the Legislature when he was taken ill in Madison. He was taken to the Methodist hospital there and underwent surgery Monday.

Assemblyman Cook was serving his sixth term in office. He served three successive terms in the Assembly (1939-45) and was re-elected in 1950, ’52 and ’54.

He was chairman of the Assembly’s Labor Committee and a member of its Agriculture Committee.

He was affiliated with the Unity Methodist Church and has served as a council member and school treasurer at Unity.

Mr. Cook was born on a farm in Unity December 21, 1888. He received his education in the Unity schools and owned and operated a farm for 17 years. He was a farm and livestock auctioneer for 28 years, and also dealt in real estate.

He is survived by his wife, the former Minnie Yahr, whom he married August 27, 1914, at Unity, and by twin daughters, Harriet, at home, and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Cromie, Seattle, Washington; and by one grandchild. Brothers and sisters who survive are George F. Cook, Unity; Raymond Cook, Marathon; Mrs. Andrew (Edith) Tollefson, Solon Springs; and Miss Mabel Cook, Chicago, Ill.

The Legislature adjourned Thursday for the week end in respect to Mr. Cook.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Unity Methodist Church with the Reverends Harvey Schall, Raymond Fleming and Lee Holmes officiating. A private service at the Cook home preceded the church rites.

Mrs. Theodore Domer sang "Be Thou Near" and "Under His Wing" accompanied by Mrs. Tom Loughead at the piano. Burial was made in the Brighton cemetery.

Pallbearers were Calvin, Sewell, Russell, Bob and Douglas Cook and Everett Capes, all nephews of the deceased.

Legislators present at the funeral were Senators Paul Rogan, Ladysmith; Hugh M. Jones, Wausau; W. W. Clark and Mrs. Clark, Vesper and Assemblyman Kuhlman, Eau Claire; Willis Hutnik, Tony; John S. Crawford, Marshfield; and Vincent and Mrs. Zellinger, Phillips.

Others from out of town at the services were Mrs. John Cromie, Seattle, Wash.; Miss Mabel Cook, Chicago; Miss Mayme Yahr, Sioux City, Ia.; Mrs. Andrew Tollufson, Solon Springs; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Mason, Thiensville; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mason, North Prarie; Mr. and Mrs. Myron Fleming, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Healy, Stanley; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cook, Ashland; Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Cook, Wisconsin Rapids; Rev. and Mrs. Fleming and Rev. and Mrs. Holmes, La Crosse; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ravey, Plainfield; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cook and Victor Crossgrove, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. R. D.
