Herman Schmidtke Family


Herman Schmidtke was born in Koenigsburg, Germany, in 1863, and was killed by a team of horses which ranaway in 1907. Mrs. Herman (Augusta) Schmidtke was born in East Prussia in 1865 and died in 1935. The two oldest children were born in Germany - Gustav in 1888, and Gusts (Mrs. Joe Madler) in 1889. Gustav passed away in 1961, and Mrs. Madler resides with her daughter in Evergreen Park, Illinois.


Mr. and Mrs. Schmidtke and their children then came to America, at first making their home with Mrs. Schmidtke sister, Mrs. Schroeder, who lived in the Town of Lynn on the farm that is now known as the George Wagner farm. Here, Otto Schmidtke was born in 1891, and Henry Schmidtke in 1893. Otto lives in the Town of York and Henry in Lidgerwood, N.D.


The family then moved to a farm in the town of Fremont and the following children were horn: William, 1894, now living in Granton; Clara Schmidtke Murrell, 1896, now deceased; Ernest Schmidtke, 1897, now living in Menasha; Paul Schmidtke, 1898, living in Loyal; Ella 'Schmidtke Dumas, 1900, living in Tacoma, Washington; Caroline Schmidtke Mulvey, 1901, now deceased; Herman Schmidtke, 1903, living in San Diego; and Mae Schmidtke Dankemyer, 1906, now deceased.


The Schmidtke family moved onto the farm in 1894 and owned it continuously until 1956 when it was sold M Mr. Ed York, making them one of the first families to settle in the Town of Fremont.
