Etta, Jacob Henry (11 Mar. 1858 - 2 July 1944)

Jacob Henry Etta, 86, died July 2, at 6:10 o’clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, mr. and Mrs. Harold Stabnow in Greenwood. He suffered a stork on Memorial Day and had been ill since then.

Mr. Etta, son of Andre and Esther (Renholds) Etta, was born in Arbun Township, Fond du Lac County, March 11, 1858. He was married to Anne Stange, July, 1888, at Colby, Wis.

Mr. Etta came to Clark County in 1882 to Spencer, where he was engaged in work for Joe Marsh at Blakesley Camp and Mapleworks. Later that year he went to Fargo, N. D. He then came back to Loyal and took up the carpenter’s trade, building many of the houses and the majority of the business places in Loyal.

In 1891, in company with his brother, Thomas Etta, he started a shingle and planing mill, which they operated together until 1911, when the partnership was dissolved and he started in business for himself in the flour and feed business. In 1913 he took his two sons, Elmer and Oscar, into business. He retired from business in 1930. He was one of the last old pioneers of the town of Loyal, having been in active business there over a period of 50 years.

He was affiliated with the Woodmen, Beavers and Equitable Fraternal Union and held various offices in the village council of Loyal. After the death of his wife on Nov. 23, 1939, he was made his home with his children.

He is survived by the following children: Elmer of Hayward; Oscar, of Manitowoc; Mrs. Harold (Esther) Stabnow, Greenwood; Mrs. Fred (Mabel) Tolleth, Wisconsin Dells; Mrs. Perry (Maude) Volk, Greenwood; and Mrs. Carl (Florence) Keiner, of Eau Claire. Also surviving are a brother, George Etta, of Sunnyside, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Koerble, of Kewaskum; two half-brothers, John and Julius Etta, of Kewaskum; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Mrs. Jane Adebush; a brother, Thomas Etta.

Funeral services were held July 5th at 2 o’clock from the Stabnow home in Greenwood. The Rev. A. E. Norson, pastor of the United Lutheran Church in Greenwood officiated. Interment was made in the Loyal Cemetery.

Etta Rites are Held

Funeral services for Jacob Henry Etta, 87, who passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stabnow, July 2, were held Wednesday afternoon, July 5, at 2 o’clock at the Harold Stabnow home. The Rev. A. E. Norson, pastor of the United Lutheran Church in Greenwood, officiated. Interment was made in the Loyal Cemetery.

During the service Mrs. Calvin Prior and Mrs. Ray Prior, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Taylor, all of Loyal, sang, "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Beyond the Sunset."

Pallbearers were George Tischer, George Weyhmiller, John Geiger, Hal Voight, Albert Davel, and Clem Rouse, all of Loyal.

Flowers bearers were: Mrs. Joseph Motchenbacker and Mrs. Henry Rottjer of Loyal; Mrs. Fred Behrens, Mrs. O. J. Amundson and Mrs. Myron Kenyon of Greenwood.

Relatives from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Etta and son, Robert, Hayward; Oscar Etta of Manitowoc; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Telleth of Wisconsin Dells; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Keiner and daughters, Mary, Patricia and Marle of Eau Claire; S/Sgt. Dale Stabnow; Clarence Etta of Minneapolis; Mrs. Celia Woodkey and daughters, Virginia and Jean, Marshfield; Mrs. Bertha Etta and daughter, Eva, Herman Stange, son Romaine, and daughter, Marie; Louie Stange, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stange, Mrs. Minnie Stange, and Mrs. Herman Leiske, all of Loyal.
