May, John (13 Aug. 1859 - 22 June 1945)

John May, whose death occurred in Chicago on Friday, June 22, was a former resident of this area. He came to Christie in 1921, and for about 15 years was engaged with his son, Fred, in running a general store there.

About two weeks prior to his death, Mr. May suffered a stroke. He died in his sleep at the home of his son, Carl, in Chicago.

Mr. May was born August 13, 1859, in Heunbeirgteim, Bavaria. The first 24 years of his life were spent in his native country. In 1883 he came to the United States and settled in Chicago, where he engaged in the meat business. In 1886 he married Anna Zeiger in Chicago, and in 1910 they moved to a farm near Wisconsin Rapids, where they resided until they came to Christie. After his retirement from his business at Christie, he and his wife lived for a time in Madison and Chicago, where Mrs. May died in March, 1942. Since the death of his wife he had made his home with his children.

The following children survive: John of Winnipeg, Canada; Louise, Mrs. Carl Schiefelbein, Janesville, Wis.; George of Neillsville; Arthur, an attorney, Madsion; E. Carl May, Chicago; T/4 Florence A. May of the WACs, now stationed in Paris, France. There are 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One son, Fred, died in 1937 at Christie.

His son, George, attended funeral services in Chicago on June 25.
