Tompkins, Alice #2 (27 OCT 1839 - 8 JUL 1903)

Mrs. Ezra Tompkins, born Alice Maxwell, died Wednesday, July 8th, 1903, at 5:15 a.m., death resulting from a tumor of cancerous nature in the abdomen. She had been taken to Eau Claire two weeks ago by Mr. Tompkins in hope that an operation would relive her, but she was took weak to undergo it, and she was brought home Sunday night.

The funeral will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m., provided the son Fred, who is on his way here from California, having started Tuesday, gets here by that time.

Deceased was born at Balston Spa, Saratoga Co., N.Y., Oct. 27, 1839. Was married to Mr. Tompkins in the early pioneer days at Wedges Creek Hotel, kept by Ans. Green five or six miles south of this city, Wm. Levis, after whom the town of Levis was named, officiating, being a justice of the peace. Her home has always been here (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.), with the exception of three years, when the family lived at big Creek, in Monroe Co. She leaves two sons, Fred and Morton, and the daughter, Mrs. Effie Masters. David Maxwell of Pine Valley is a brother.

Co. Bee of California, a brother-in-law, and his wife, and their only son, died a few years ago, leaving the decedent and her brother considerable property.

She was a woman of many good qualities of mind and heart, and although for some years frail physically, was still active in many ways, devoted to those about her. Those she leaves behind have the sympathy of the community.
