Stockwell, Katharine A. (20 MAY 1878 - 31 MAR 1947)

Funeral services for Mrs. Katharine Alexander Stockwell, 68, were held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, April 1, at the Georgas Funeral Home, where the body had lain in state since Sunday. Services were in charge of Carmi Chapter No. 60, of the Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Stockwell was a member. Worthy Matron Evelyn Schwantes conducted the service, assisted by other officers of the chapter. Mrs. O. W. Schoengarth and Mrs. Walter Beilfuss sang and were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Kathryn Cole. Pallbearers were Alfred Kleckner, William Ruchaber, Harry VanGorden, John Peterson, Arne Petersen and A. L. Devos. Burial took place in the Alexander family lot in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Stockwell died early Sunday morning at her home in the Bradbury apartments, after only a few hours’ illness. She had been in failing health the past several years.

Katharine Alexander, daughter of Ada Hemphill and Thompson Alexander, was born may 20, 1878, in Caledonia, Minn. She received her education in Chicago and came as a young woman to Neillsville. She later lived at Jacksonville, Fla., for a number of years. The past seven years she has made her home in Neillsville.

In January 1922, she was married to Cyrus S. Stockwell at Waukegan, Ill. Mr. Stockwell was a Masonic past grand master of the state of Wisconsin, and at the time of his death in June 1928, was a Masonic grand lecturer.

Surviving are several step-children: Cyrus D. Stockwell, Eau Claire; Mrs. Lottie Cook, Milwaukee; Mrs. Grace Thomas, Fargo, N.D.; Mrs. E. G. (Mattie) Wanner, Bismarck, N.D.; A. R. Stockwell, Neillsville; Mrs. William (Ethel) Holway, Madison. There are eleven step-grandchildren. Two stepsons, Israel and Thomas Stockwell, are deceased, and also a brother and a sister.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the services were: Mrs. Lottie Cook and Mrs. Helene Zinn, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. William Holway, Madison; Richard Stockwell, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Harry VanGorden, Merrillan; Mrs. Julius Stoker, Fairchild; Mr. and Mrs. George Larson and Mrs. W. R. Matthew, Altoona.
