Lee Counsell, 84, of Carbondale, IL, formerly of Neillsville, died Dec. 31, 2007

A graveside service will be held for Lee at 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2008, at Neillsville City Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Neillsville Veterans Council.

Lee Counsell was born the son of Henrietta and Clarion Counsell in the Pleasant Ridge area. His life was a never-ending quest for knowledge. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; he earned his DDS at Northwestern University in Chicago, a master’s in public health at the University of Michigan and graduate fellow at eh University of Scotland in Dundee.

He served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1972, retiring as a commander. Following his retirement from the Navy, he taught at Southern Illinois University for eight years, was assistant chief of the Bureau of Dental Health for the state of Florida and a public health dentist for the state of Nevada.

Lee enjoyed foreign languages and taught Spanish and Portuguese. He also enjoyed sailing and was an accomplished pianist and pipe organ player. He loved classical music and was active in the Episcopal Church. He also published numerous research articles on dental health.

He is survived by a sister, Doris (Harold Osborn; nieces and nephews, Ann (Osborn) Mohr, James Osborn, Gary Pagenkopf, and Susan (Pagenkopf) Sellnou; and many great-nieces and nephews.
