Dudley, Philip S. #2 (17 OCT 1839 - 1 JAN 1905)

Philip S. Dudley died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, 1905, while enjoying his New Year dinner with his wife at the home on Grand Av. (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.). He was as well as usual apparently up to the very moment when, seated at the table, of heart failure. At noon he had been up town, chatting with his friends, without a premonition of death or any illness.

Decedent was born in Middleburg, New York, Oct. 17, 1839, making his age 65 years, 3 months and 15 days, living at Delavan, at which place he was married to Maria McArthur who survives him, and at a later time established a harness business at Cambridge, Dane Co., moving here in 1869.

Besides the wife he leaves the daughter Ella, of St. Paul, Mabel of Abbotsford, and the son, Arthur E. of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Milo Bell, living in Tennessee, and Dr. Helena Pramer of Marshalltown, Iowa.

The funeral was held at the Congregational Church on Tuesday at 2, conducted by Rev. G. W. Longenecker.

Mr. Dudley was a man of sunny disposition, and of many most excellent qualities of heart and mind. So old a settler and so companionable a man, with his jovial round face and cheerful smile, apt stories, sharp wit, and keen observations, his loss will be deeply felt for many years, and until newcomers wholly possess the town we will hear from some old settler "what Dudley said." He carried on a harness shop here for 35 years. With him gone Neillsville will seem less like itself than of old.
