Haven, Glenn J. (9 November 1873 - 3 January 1949)

Former Justice here dies January 3; was lawyer and rural teacher

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Glenn J. Haven, 75, former Neillsville justice who died at his home here January 3, 1949, following an illness of about a year.

A former school teacher, lawyer, farmer and veteran of World War I, Mr. Haven suffered a stroke about a year ago, from which he partially recovered.

Mr. Haven was born November 9, 1873, in Marengo, Ill., the son of Jasper and Julia Haven. He received his early education there, and attended Cedar Falls (Ill.) normal school, becoming a rural school teacher in northern Illinois following his graduation.

He used teaching as a stepping stone to a law education, and in the 1890’s he attended Dickson College in Illinois, where he was a school mate of Merlin Hull, present publisher of the Black River Falls Banner Journal. He was graduated in the late 1890’s, and was admitted to the Illinois bar and later set up a practice in Nashville, Tenn.

On February 16, 1916, he was married in Marengo to Jennie Mae Dean, who survives. A year later, in spite of his age (he was then 44) he enlisted in the army to serve in the war. He attended officers’ training school at Ft. Sheridan, and later was given a medical discharge.

It was Mr. Haven’s health which brought him into Clark County to take up farming in the Town of Weston in 1918. He remained on the farm for several years, and then moved into Neillsville.

During the later years of his active life, Mr. Haven served as justice of the peace here, a post to which he was twice elected.

The services Wednesday afternoon were held at the Cole Funeral Home, with the Rev. N.J. Dechant in charge. The body was taken to Minneapolis for cremation, and will be buried later in Marengo.

Surviving besides his widow is a step-son, E. J. Roberts of Neillsville, two grandchildren, John Roberts of Mankato, Minn., and Glenn Roberts of Neillsville, a great-grandson, two nephews and a niece.
