Marten, William (4 JUN 1892 - 2 OCT 1939)

Funeral services for William Marten were held Thursday afternoon fro the Zink Funeral Home at 1:30 and at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church at two o’clock. The Rev. J. Brandt conducted the service. Interment followed in the Spencer Cemetery.

Nephews of Mr. Marten acted as pallbearers. They were: Elroy and Herman Marten, Charles Huber, Herbert Bervesdorf, Arnold Brueswitz and William Schmidt.

Nieces were in charge of the floral offerings. They were the Misses Margie, Marian, betty and Arlene Leidtke, Mrs. Lorena Huber, Mrs. Helen Seitz, Mrs. Irene Brueswitz and Mrs. Dorothy Bervesdorf.

William Marten was born June 4th, 1892 in the Town of Brighton (Marathon Co., Wis.). On Dec. 13, 1916 he was married there to Miss Elsie Schmidt. The young couple engaged in farming there and at Spencer, later moving to Riplinger where Mr. Marten worked in the box factory.

For a short time they lived in Edgar and for the past 12 years they have made their home in Abbotsford, Wis. Mr. Marten had been in poor health all the years he lived here.

On August 8th he was taken to Mount View Sanitarium, Wausau, where he died at 3:10 a.m. Monday, of emphysema at the age of 47.

He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Bunkleman of Milan, Lorraine, at home; three sons, Eugene, Dewaine, Billy, all at home. One infant daughter (Ellner, ) preceded him in death.

Four sisters, Mrs. Walter Brueswitz, Mrs. Charles Justman, Mrs. Albert Manthe of Spencer; Mrs. Annie Kneer of Madison; three brothers, Frank of Fremont, Emil of Spencer and Herman of Milwaukee, also survive.

Among the relatives from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marten, Fremont; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Marten, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Marten, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brueswitz, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Manthe, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Justman, Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Winters, Beaver Dam; Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt, son, Omar, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schmidt, Fox Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bervesdorf, Birnamwood; Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Marten, Riplinger.

Eller Mathilde, the daughter of William and Elsie (Schmidt) Marten was born 16 Feb 1911.  He fragile life was cut short with a bout of Bronchopneumonia during the winter of 1920.  She died the 18th of February and was buried in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Spencer, Wisconsin two days later.
