Ayers, Rachael (4 APR 1910 - 22 JAN 1943)

The many friends of Mrs. Cullen Ayers, 32, were grieved to hear of her unexpected death Friday evening, Jan. 22. Mrs. Ayers, who had been ill at her home in the village for three weeks, seemed to be improving when her death came suddenly, the result of a heart attack.

Mrs. Ayers, nee Rachael Schuld, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schuld, was born in Loyal on April 9, 1910. She attended the parochial school here and took a nurse’s course in the Ashland hospital. She then entered the Medford hospital as a nurse and was employed there for 10 years. After her marriage to Cullen Ayers on Aug. 28, 1937, at Caledonia, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Ayers made their home here. Following the death of her sister, Mrs. A. L. Montgomery last March, Mr. and Mrs. Ayers gave a home to the infant son of the Montgomery’s.

Mrs. Ayers lived much of her life here, and her friendly, kindly ways won the friendship of all that knew her.

She is survived by her husband and her foster son, John Henry Montgomery; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schuld; her sister, Mrs. Leslie James, Mauston; two brothers, Oscar Schuld, Menomonee Falls; and Henry Schuld, at home, and her father-in-law, William Ayers, who had made his home with his son and daughter-in-law since their marriage.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Anthony’s Catholic church, The Rev, Fr. Michael O. M. Cap, Marathon, officiated at the requiem high mass, and burial was in the parish cemetery. Father Michael conducted a rosary service for Mrs. Ayers Monday evening at the Nichols Funeral Home, where the body was lying in state.

Pallbearers were Raphael Haas, Roman Braun, Frank Degenhardt, John Castner, Bernard Beaver and Rueben Bertz. Flowers were carried by Lauretta, Lorraine and Alvera Missling.

Those from out of town who attended the services were mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schuld and daughter Beverly of Menomonee Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie James of Mauston, A. L. Montgomery and Herman A Van Wychen of Lake Tomahawk, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wisnowski of Riplinger.

Many from away called at the funeral parlors. Among them were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Huebner, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ruesch, Mrs. Ed Ruesch and Vivian Seaforth all of Medford; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Boie, Owen, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schultz, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bymers and Mr. and Mrs. John Sayther, all of Spencer.
