Unity Sergeant Was Flight Engineer in Southwestern Pacific; First Local Death

Sgt. Herbert E. Knecht, 22, who was serving as flight engineer in the Southwest Pacific, was killed on Feb. 7 in performance of his duty, according to information received from the war department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Knecht, route one, Unity.

Sgt. Knecht, who was elevated to that rank on Jan. 31, had enlisted in the marines on Jan. 12, 1942, and had received his basic training in San Diego, Cal., from January to April. He attended naval aviation service school at the U.S. naval air station, Jacksonville, Fla., graduating from there on Oct. 17, 1942, with a corporal’s rating.

After graduating he returned to San Diego and completed a course for air force personnel in the first and second echelon, airplane and engine maintenance, on Dec. 4, 1942. Shortly after this he flew to an unknown destination.

Sgt. Knecht was born in Winona, Minn., on Aug. 29, 1920, and received his eight years of grade school education in the Oak Grove public school at Unity. He was employed by William Seeman for some time before his enlistment.

Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Carlton Knecht, Unity, and Roland Knecht at home, and two sisters, Miss Bernadine Knecht, Unity, and Miss Ardina Knecht, at home.
