Helmut Johannes Gerhard Fuhrman, named after two of his uncles who fell in World War II, was born July 24, 1949, in Golefanz, Germany, to Bruno and Marie (Beduhn) Fuhrman. Along with his parents and older sister, Inge, Helmut immigrated to the United States in Sept. 1951. After settling in the town of Spencer in Marathon County, Helmut received his education at Spencer Public School and graduated from Spencer High School. He furthered his education by attending The Milwaukee School of Engineering, University of Madison and the University of Eau Claire. The call of the family farm during the Vietnam era beckoned. Helmut answered that call by pouring himself into the seasons of the land on the dairy farm in the town of Spencer. He remained a farmer until the time of his death.

Helmut enjoyed hunting and fishing, photography, cross-country skiing and biking. He was an avid reader and loved classical music and familiar old German hymns and tunes. One of his greatest joys was visiting with his wonderful neighbors and many friends and sharing his bountiful harvest of sweet corn with those same neighbors and friends.

Helmut is survived by one brother, Martin (Cathy) Fuhrman of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and one sister, Inge Hawks of Plantation, Fla. Helmut also is survived by nieces and nephews, Matthew (Jen) Fuhrman and their children, Jackson and Amelia, all of St. Charles, Ill.; Andrea (Bobby) Snow and their daughter, Natalie, all of Naperville, Ill.; Jenna Fuhrman of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; and Renata Hawks of Germantown. He is further survived by a faithful and special employee of Fuhrman Farms, Denise (Jeff) Rucker of Spencer; as well as a host of friends and neighbors and many other relatives and friends living in Germany.

Helmut is preceded in death by his parents, and a nephew, Radley Hawks.

The neighborhood will be different with Helmut gone. He fought a courageous battle with heart disease. If desired, memorials in Helmut's name may be given to the charity of your choice.
