Hium, Kenneth E. (17 APR 1925 - 26 AUG 2008)

Kenneth E. Hium, 83, Eau Claire, formerly of Greenwood, died at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, August 30, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Greenwood.

The Rev. Terri Blomberg officiated. Burial followed in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Kenneth Edwin Hium was born on April 17, 1925, in Greenwood, to Theodore and Emma (nee Wehrman) Hium. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at Benjamin School and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1942. After graduation, he worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the U.S. Navy on Oct. 11, 1943. He served on the U.S.S. Intrigue. During a short leave home, he married Donna Kind on Dec. 31, 1945, at the United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greenwood. He received his honorable discharge on April 26, 1946. He returned to Greenwood and took over the operation of his family’s farm. He also worked at A.S.C.S. in Neillsville, and was a rural mail carrier for the Greenwood Post Office for many years. They moved into Greenwood in 1980, and sold their farm in the early 1990’s. They moved to Eau Claire in 2003. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where he served on the building committee for the present church, served on the church council and was the financial secretary for many years. He also served on the Benjamin School Board and on the Town of Warner Board of Supervisors. He had many interests, but especially loved spending time with his family, casinos, traveling, and shaking dice for coffee at the Greenwood Café.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Donna, Eau Claire; three daughters, JoAnn Hium (Jerry Gouge), Verona, Peggy (Wayne) Turnquist, Eau Claire, and Darla Hium (Tom Ament), Wauwatosa; his foreign exchange daughter, Patricia Arfinengo, Peru; four grandchildren, Holly (Pat) Hassemer, Becca (Dan) Coleman, Ben Turnquist, and Francesca Carella; one great-grandson, Marcus Coleman; and one sister, Marie (Chet) Nirva, Withee.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
