Barker, George R. (24 June 1872 - 13 June 1938)

GEORGE BARKER IS VICTIM OF STROKE

Funeral services for George Barker, who died at his home Tuesday morning, will be conducted Friday afternoon at two o’clock from the home and at 2:30 from the Presbyterian church. The funeral will be conducted under the auspices of the Abbotsford Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Barker has been confined to his bed for the past 14 weeks as the result of a stroke. He would have been 66 years old this month. Death was cause by complications resulting from the stroke suffered about four months ago.

Mr. Barker lived in this vicinity all his like. He was a retired mail carrier, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Maccabees, Woodmen, and of the Rural Letter Carriers’ Association.

RETIRED MAIL CARRIER PASSES AWAY JUNE 13

On Friday, June 17, at 2:30 P. M., one of the largest funerals held in this village was conducted at the Presbyterian church for George R. Barker, retired rural mail carrier, who passed away on June 13 after an illness of 15 weeks, caused by a stroke. He was born June 24, 1872 at Plover, Wis., came with his parents to the town of Holton at the age of six months. All of his life was spent in this community. On July 30, 1901 he was married to Mildred McKenna at Colby, Wis. One daughter was born to this union, Fern, who passed away on April 16, 1937. On November 1, 1904 he entered the rural mail service, retiring after 30 years service on Nov. 1, 1934.

Rev. E. H. Hoover conducted the services at the church. Two solos were sung by Mrs. A. J. Folstad, "Face to Face" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", with Mrs. William Berger accompanying.

The many beautiful floral offerings were carried by members of the Eastern Star. The active pallbearers were Dr. J. A. Rilling, Joe Konicny, Chas. Engel, Kenneth Ingersoll, Martin Anderson, H. T. Ketcham.

The services at the grave were conducted by the Masonic Order. Mr. Barker was also a member of the Maccobees and Rural Letter Carriers, who attended in a body. Interment took place at the Abbotsford Cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, four grandchildren, three sisters: Mrs. Mabel Martens, Abbotsford; Mrs. Tom Miller, Withee; Mrs. Fred Peters, Fond du Lac; one brother, Seth, of Abbotsford, Wis.

*Transcriber note: There is a McKenna Family History page on this site which includes a photo of George & Mildred (McKenna) Barker. The Abbotsford Centennial Book apparently says George Barker was the first baby born in Abbotsford, but this obit says he was born in Plover, WI and came to Abbotsford at the age of six months.
