Mills, Claude Lee (7 December 1877 - 24 June 1949)

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Christie Methodist Church for Claude Lee Mills, 71, a life-long resident of Clark County and an early teacher in Clark County rural schools.

Mr. Mills suffered a stroke June 21, and died last Friday, June 24, 1949, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Foemmel.

The father of Calvin Mills, longtime county clerk of Clark County and presently the Superintendent of the Clark County Hospital at Owen, Mr. Mills was born December 7, 1877, on the Mills family farm in the Town of Weston. The farm had been purchased by his father, and today is occupied by a son, Lee and his family.

He grew up on the farm and attended schools of the county and the normal school at Eau Claire. Following his graduation there he took up teaching in the rural schools of the county and followed this profession for 19 years.

(Missing words) was married to Charlotte Asplin of Tioga, who survives. Eight children were born to this union, of whom six survive, two having died in infancy.

Always interested in community affairs, Mr. Mills served as clerk of the Town of Weston for 15 years, and also served on his school district board for two terms. He was an active member of the Christie Methodist Church.

For the first 65 years of his life, Mr. Mills remained on the home farm in Weston. In his latter years he had held from his sons. But when the youngest, Orin, went into the army, he sold the farm to his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mills. He and Mrs. Mills then made their home on a small tract of land in the Town of York.

They spent the past two winters in North Carolina, where Orin and his family now reside.

All the children were home for the services, Orin flying as far as Madison from his home in North Carolina. The services were conducted by the Rev. Virgil Nulton, with burial being made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Georgas Funeral Home.

Surviving besides Mrs. Mills are the children; Calvin of Owen, Lee of Neillsville, Glenn of Greenwood, Mrs. Alfred (Jessie) Foemmel and Mrs. William (Laura) Genteman, both of Neillsville, and Orin of Jamestown, N.C.; and 19 grandchildren. Two children, Gladys and Donald, died in infancy.

Pallbearers were: Arthur Barton, Dan Timerson, E. K. Loberg, Julius Bohnsack, Walter Boon and Len Boon.

In charge of flowers were: Mrs. Dale Armitage, Mrs. George Scherer, Mrs. Louis Shaw, Mrs. Robert Free and Mrs. Robert Beyer. Ellis Wall sang two selections, accompanied by Miss Verna Schaefer at the organ.
