Bitter, Charles D. (1 April 1860 - 14 Sept 1938)

CHARLES D. BITTER DIES SUDDENLY

The funeral of Charles D. Bitter, who died suddenly at the home of his son, Harvey, Wednesday morning, will take place Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the home of his son, Ervin Bitter, and at 2:00 o’clock from the Presbyterian church. The immediate cause of death was embolism.

Charles Bitter was the son of John and Anna Bitter, born in Sheboygan County April 1, 1860. In 1881 he was married in Sheboygan to Hulda Ziemke, also of Sheboygan. To them were born 12 children.

For a few years the young couple lived in Oshkosh where Mr. Bitter was engaged in the cheese business, then they returned to Sheboygan and lived on a farm. About 1902 the family moved to Dorchester where for a short time he worked in a planing mill.

They then moved to their farm north of Curtiss and lived there until about 12 years ago when they moved to Abbotsford, Wis. While here Mr. Bitter acted as insurance agent for the Minnesota Farmer until about three years ago when he retired on account of ill health.

The deceased is survived by five children: Ervin, Harvey and Mrs. Carl Scheuerman of Abbotsford; Edgar of Iowa Falls, Ia., and Mrs. Nick Selvener of Chippewa Falls; a sister, Mrs. Aug. Schultz of Owen; one brother, Henry Bitter of Mio, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife, who died four years ago, and seven children preceded him in death.

Burial of Mr. Bitter will take place at the family lot at Dorchester, Wis. The pallbearers will be Ed Leichtnam, Charles Ipsen, Otto Froebel, Fred Rahn, Henry Rau and Reinhardt Klocke.

CHARLES BITTER IS BURIED SATURDAY

Funeral services for Charles D. Bitter, 78, were conducted Saturday afternoon at the home of Ervin Bitter. At 2:30 o’clock the Rev. E. L. Hoover officiated at the services at the Presbyterian church in Abbotsford, Wis. Interment was made in the Dorchester cemetery.

At the services five granddaughters of the deceased, Genevieve, LaVerne, Violet, Ann and Vivian Selzner of Chippewa Falls, sang "Four Square" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Flower girls, all granddaughters, were Genevieve, LaVerne, Violet, Ann and Vivian Selzner of Chippewa Falls; Rosemary Bitter of Abbotsford; and Mildred Heidtke of Dorchester, Wis.

Out of town relatives attending the (unreadable) were: Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bitter and daughter of Iowa Falls, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Nick Selzner and daughters of Chippewa Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Schuerman of Laona, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wellman and family of Unity, Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Van Gorder and daughter of Colby, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Waldhart of Stetsonville, Otto Heidtke and daughter Mildred of Dorchester, Mr. and Mrs. August Schultze, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Schultze, Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Schultze of Owen, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bitter and family, Hugo Bitter and Mrs. Emma Ohde of Sheboygan, Mr. and Mrs. Bob English of Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Art Drace of Stanley, Mrs. Wm. Jennings of Chippewa Falls.

Friends from away who were in attendance included Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wagner, Albert Wagner, Mrs. Fred Rahn Sr., Mrs. and Mrs. Art Klocke, Mrs. Fred Rahn Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Robert Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Klocke all of Curtiss, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Klienke and family of Marinette, Mrs. Wm. Gruman and daughter of Laona; Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Dohm, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ruesch of Medford, Miss Florence Thorn, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith, Colby, Wis.
