Scheuermann, Robert P. P. (20 FEB 1934 - 26 MAY 1946)

The fun and play of a group of Owen, Wis. (Clark Co., Wis.) youngsters was tragically disrupted early Sunday afternoon when Robert Paul Phillips Scheuermann, 12, lost his life by drowning in the Owen Mill Pond.

Bobby, as he was known to his playmates, along with Billy Roberson, 1, Jack Johnson, 11, and Kenneth and Billy Strohkirch, 12 and 11, were playing on the Soo Line right of way bridge at the north end of the mill pond. Bobby and Jack Johnson decided to go swimming and for awhile had a lot of fun with the rest of the group witnessing their frolic.

Tragedy struck when Jack Johnson dived off the bridge and bobby did likewise. Diving was a new and fatal experience for him. He stock on his stomach, evidently causing him severe pain, according to his companions, as he called for help. The youths thought he was fooling, but when the seriousness of his cries were realized Jack Johnson, his swimming companion, went to his aid. Johnson was nearly pulled under by Bobby’s grasp and he had to fight to free himself from his hold.

Aid was then immediately summoned by the youngsters who notified Bobby’s parents. The Owen fire company was called to the scene and through the use of their boat and pike poles, located the body in ten feet of water.

Artificial respiration was administered to the youth for forty-five minutes, but he efforts failed.

Robert Paul Phillips Scheuermann was born on Feb. 20, 1934, at Oneida, N.Y. He attended St. Patrick’s Parochial School at Oneida, N.Y., and also attended school at Braun’s Settlement near Greenwood this last year.

Since moving to Owen a couple of weeks ago, Bobby joined the local Boy Scout troop, exhibiting an early interest in their work. He had quickly won for himself a large circle of friends and playmates.

Surviving the youth are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Scheuermann, two sisters, Rosemary and Mary Gertrude, and two brothers, James and Johnnie Phillips.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 29, from the Holy Rosary Church, Owen, by Father Brockman. Interment was made in the Riverside Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were twelve of his fellow Boy Scouts of the Owen troop: Walter Smith, Jerry Clifton, James Doucette, Jack Larson, Paul Bladl, Jr., Bobby Meyers, Glen Creg, Kenneth Strohkirch, Jerry Madsen, Arlo Lindner, LeRoy Johnson, and Donald Haralson.
