Oberle, William (25 JUN 1865 - 26 DEC 1946)

William Oberle passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred J. Schmidt, Thursday morning at 5:15 o’clock, Dec. 26, 1946, of old age infirmities. He had reached the age of 81 years and 6 months.

William Oberle was born in Baden, Germany, June 25, 1865, where he grew to manhood. He came to America in 1890 and located in Sheboygan, Wis. On Feb. 19, 1895 he was united in marriage to Anna Liske at Thorp, Wis. Twelve children blessed their marriage, seven sons and five daughters. Soon after their marriage they purchased an eighty acre farm near Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) in the Town of Worden, where they resided for 29 years. In 1924 they moved to the village of Thorp, which has since been his home.

Mr. Oberle was sexton of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church for 13 years and when his health began to fail he resigned from this position.

On Feb. 19, 1945, Mr. and Mrs. William Oberle celebrated their golden wedding at their home with all children present for the happy occasion.

Surviving relatives are his six sons, Blasius, Martin, Peter and Fred of Thorp, August of Loyal, Leo of Gilman and five daughters, Mrs. Fred Schmidt (Matilda), Mrs. George Meske (Anna), of Thorp; and Mrs. Anton Hendricks (Agnes) of Sheboygan; Mrs. Beck Dalsba (Mary) of Port Washington; and Mrs. Peter Larson Jr., (Gertrude) of Tioga; 35 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother, Blasius Oberle of Sheboygan. The oldest son died in infancy.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.M. Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock, Dec. 28th. He was laid to rest in St. Bernard’s Cemetery at Thorp. Pallbearers were: Anton Baldeschwiler, Louis Henke, Joseph Gengler, William Wilhelm, Arthur Soderberg, Sr., and Frank Meske, of Thorp.

Those from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Anton Hendricks and family, Mrs. Arnold Mortensen and daughter Jeannie, Peter Oberle and William Schmidt of Sheboygan; Mr. and Mrs. Beck Dalsba, George and Gerald Turenne, of Port Washington; August Oberle of Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Larson of Tioga; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Oberle of Gilman; Mary Ann Meske of Hinsdale, Ill.; Betty Meske of LaGrange, Ill.; Adolph Imbery, Cadott; Mr. and Mrs. John Kiraly and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Baker and Catherine Meyer of Stanley.
